Description
Original Fine Art Photography and digital oil painting by Donna Kennedy..
The Donner Summit Bridge at an elevation of 7,056 ft, offers beautiful views near the area where Chinese workers labored to construct the transcontinental railroad across the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Also known as The Donner Memorial Bridge and Rainbow Bridge, opened in 1928-29 and was rehabilitated in 1996. It is 241 feet in length and has a 24 foot wide deck. This graceful bridge near the summit of Donner Pass was designed by Norman Raab. Raab is best known for the bridges he designed for the Pacific Coast Highway. Unlike those bridges, the Donner Bridge has two other features - that is rises in elevation (from east to west) and that it is curved.
When it came time to dedicate the bridge, all survivors or descendants of the Donner Party (if any) were invited to the ceremony.
The Donner Summit Bridge has become a local icon for Truckee and the Donner Lake area.
In September 2007, an amusing incident occurred at the bridge. A black bear became trapped on the underside of the bridge's arch. Fortunately, the bear was rescued. 0224

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
